In this module, you will read two of the greatest historians of ancient Rome, Tacitus and Gibbon. By reflecting on the decline of Rome, you will confront enduring questions, such as: How can civil concord be achieved and civil war avoided? What are the obstacles for the reign of a good ruler? How is it that great empires can collapse? What is the political significance of religion? Read about the emperors of Rome's decline, and the rise of the new religious worldview that would come to shape the Middle Ages.

Apr 16th: Tacitus, Annals, I-II.

Apr 23rd : Tacitus, Annals, IV-VI.

Apr 30th : Tacitus, Annals, XIII-XV.

May 7th : Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, I-III.

May 14th : Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, XV.

Upon successfully completing the course, you will receive a certificate.
What is the teaching method?
All class sessions will be conducted as “seminars,” or Socratic conversations. Students are expected to actively participate in the discussion for the duration of each class session.

This course costs €795 for 5 weeks of class, 2 hours per week.
